I imagine your cortisol levels spiked after reading the title. If you read the news earlier this week, perhaps your cortisol levels haven't come down.

Frankly, my anxiety was through the roof.

Forget the thought of losing our jobs to AI, losing our sense of purpose, or knowing if the funny cat dancing is real or not. How about the thought of going extinct? Let alone, in a decade!

Then, I found a ray of hope that I want to share with you.

At work (the place where I count the minutes until I can grab my camera again or go home to edit some photos), I shared the statistic, which came from a former researcher of Open AI (ChatGPT) who made it public a few days prior, with a pair of colleagues.

They both laughed.

We were walking to get our famous daily 2:00 pm coffee.

One of my colleagues said "humans have been dreaming up all the ways we are all going to die tragically. This is not the first time."

He's right. Remember 2012 when the Mayan calendar ended and the world was supposed to end as well?

Then, the other colleague said something even better.

"…So there's a 90% chance it doesn't kill us all."

I paused. Then, I smiled.

He may have been joking or feeling extra positive that day. But his comment wasn't any less true. It's simple math. And while it isn't simple to tune out the doomsayers and the bad news, it amazes me how humans can continue to thrive on the face of adversity, to stare danger directly in the eyes and push ahead.
